Matt Chinn
Hey, Matt Chinn from the UK, I’m the Primal Evolve Coach, where I take our athletes to the next level after the initial phase programme, deeper diving into all areas of personal and athletic development.
Growing up - I lived out in the country rolling around in the mud, building treehouses and bases, playing football, camping, and just being out in nature, it was the kind of childhood that when the streetlights came on - you go home or you missed dinner!
I discovered my love for fitness and mountains, when I took on the 3 peaks challenge when I was 14 years old and our team got the gold medal time which then sent me on a trajectory to explore as much as I could whilst pushing my physical and mental limits in the years that followed.
I joined the military when I was 19 years old, and served for 12 years, gaining promotion by the end of my career, I deployed to multiple countries in the Middle East and across the world including 3 x tours of Op Herrick Afghanistan
I also joined the Mountain Rescue Team for 2 years, reacting to many callouts. I gained a lot of experience and confidence from that role and it was one of the most rewarding voluntary roles I have undertook.
When i left the military in 2019 I sold everything and left just one box of memories, the goal was a year to forever.. 5 years later I’m still on the forever part..
I have spent most of my time travelling in Latin America, but visited Asia and Africa to take on a few challenges and races along the way. The experiences I’ve gained and the exposure to different cultures has taught me many things, and it’s a journey I’m continuing to explore at a slower pace now. I’ve been fortunate to experience and capture so many memories from this. Just before the pandemic I was volunteering in Nicaragua taking tours up the countries most active Volcanoes, before the world shut down and I got stuck there for a year.
Along the way I have completed many ultra distance races and 24 hour races within top 10 and successfully summited mountains all the way upto 6088m. I’ve also ventured into the world of higher altitude racing which presents a different challenge to normal trail racing.
My most recent races have seen me place within top 10;
3rd place in a 100km stage race in the Dominican Republic
3rd place foreigner for the Mt Everest Marathon (5364m)
8th place AG in my first Spartan Beast
9th Place AG in the 50km World Trail Series UTCB (UItra Trail Cordillera Blanca) Peru at altitudes of over 4500m
Goals for the future - Complete a 7000m peak in the Himalayas, and hit as many podiums for the future races across the world as I can! I also want to gain fluency in Spanish to really connect with the locals on a deeper level.
Liam Mitchell
Hey, I’m Liam Mitchell (Mitch). I’m the Primal Awakening coach.
Here is a bit about me and my journey, so far…
Growing up - I loved playing outside whether it was playing football, running, or even playing soldiers with sticks as guns. I was always up to some sort of mischief exploring and walking literally everywhere. I ran for the school cross country team and I always placed top 3. I was a popular loner. I had a couple of close friends,I knew a lot of people and a lot of people knew me but most of the time I would be by myself. I wanted lots of friends but I didn’t really fit in. I was a bit of a weirdo but I love that.
Military career - I served 4 years in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers 1st Battalion Armoured Infantry. With in my time I became a Lcpl (2nd in command of a section of 8 troops) and a PTI (physical training instructor). I have trained with multiple forces and helped hundreds of soldiers keep in shape ready for combat.
Into the real world… since my department of the military I travelled the world partying, getting into trouble and trying to find my feet again. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and it was a hard transition. With the military being a huge part of my life, the real world was completely different. That is until I found Primal Fitness
Biggest challenge - my biggest challenge was escaping the cocaine and alcohol abuse. It was something I relied on for a very long time. Once I said I ain’t doing it anymore I stopped and never looked back. It was the best decision I ever made. Being a civilian was also a hard challenge even to this day I find it hard as being a solider was instilled in me for quite a long time and was all I ever wanted to do.
Goals and focuses - my goal is to become one of the best OCR athletes in the UK and around the world. I will show the world that even after you mess up a million times you can still inspire and succeed in anything you put your mind to as long as you take the right action.
Josie Lloyd
Hey, I’m Josie I’m the Primal awakening female health, Spartan UK pro team 🇬🇧 & performance coach.
Here is a bit about me and my journey, so far…
Growing up - I was always a monkey and was climbing up things I shouldn’t be and making dens, always active but only moved into competitive running at the age of 18 when I joined a fell running club. I also swam for my county for a few years back in secondary school. I’ve always felt like I didn’t fit into the mould that society wanted me to be and I find the Primal community has been one of the few places I feel welcome.
Military career - I had a short, 2 year stint in the RAF Police where I nabbed a chronic back injury that I’m still working through. Happy to leave but also happy to have served.
Into the real world… I left the military this year and I’m l now embarking upon my own coaching and yoga teaching online business, alongside coaching for Primal. I am extremely interested in female health as a female myself who’s had some ups and downs along the way and endeavour to help women harness their hormones to help bolster their performance.
Biggest challenge - breaking my ribs and damaging my intercostal nerve in my back at the same time as acquiring PTSD. 2022 was by far emotionally the hardest year of my life.
Goals and focuses - I am working my way up the rankings on the UKOCR Series of 2024 and aim to find balance and stability in my life to help bolster my training and racing. Preparing for the FISO OCR Euro Championships in September of 2024.
